Fair Trade

PRESS RELEASE

FAIRTRADE TOWNS LAUNCH

July 22, 2007

Malton and Norton will be launched as fair-trade towns this week.

Scrumptious ethically traded produce will be available to enjoy at a public meeting being held in Malton to outline the benefits of fair trade.

And Caribbean banana grower Simeon Greene is among a bunch of speakers there to talk about how fair trade helps improve life for growers.

Also appearing will be Bruce Crowther, who works with the Fair Trade Foundation, and helped to launch the UK’s first ever fair trade town.

Fair trade is a global movement to support producers, especially farmers in the third world, to earn a fair price for their goods on the world market.

Campaigners from Malton and Norton have joined together to help the towns achieve Fair Trade status.

To do this, it has to meet a number of targets, including bringing the town councils and local retailers on board.

Alison Hardwick, a founding member of the group said: "We’ve produced a list of local shops and café’s selling and serving fairly traded produce.

"Both the list and produce will be available at the meeting.

"We hope people will come along, hear why fair trade is so important, enjoy some fair-trade refreshments and give their support to the campaign."

The launch will take place on Tuesday July 3 at Saville Street Methodist Church, Saville Street, Malton at 7.30pm.
